Avolac 3.35 g/5 ml

Solution

Generic: Lactulose

Square Pharmaceuticals PLC.

Therapeutic Class: Osmotic Laxative

Indications

Constipation; hepatic encephalopathy (portal systemic encephalopathy).

Pharmacology

Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed from the gut. In the colon it is broken down by bacteria into organic acids, which draw water into the bowel, soften the stool and stimulate bowel movement; the acidic environment also reduces the absorption of ammonia.

Dosage & Administration

Constipation (adult): initially 15 ml twice daily, adjusted according to response. Child under 1 year: 2.5 ml twice daily; 1 to 4 years: 2.5 to 10 ml twice daily; 5 to 17 years: 5 to 20 ml twice daily. Hepatic encephalopathy (adult): 30 to 50 ml 3 times daily, adjusted to produce 2 to 3 soft stools daily.

Side Effects

Flatulence, abdominal cramps and discomfort, and nausea. High doses may cause diarrhoea.

Precautions & Warnings

May take up to 48 hours to act. Drink plenty of fluid. Use with caution in lactose intolerance and, at high doses, in diabetic patients. Prolonged use of high doses may cause electrolyte disturbance.

Contraindications

Galactosaemia. Intestinal obstruction or perforation. Hypersensitivity to lactulose.
