Renata PLC.

Therapeutic Class: Emergency Contraceptive

Indications

Emergency contraception within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse or failure of a contraceptive method.

Pharmacology

Levonorgestrel is a progestogen that, given in a single high dose, acts mainly by preventing or delaying ovulation. It is not effective once implantation has taken place.

Nausea, lower abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, fatigue, breast tenderness and irregular bleeding; the next period may be early or late.

Precautions & Warnings

For occasional emergency use only; it should not replace a regular method of contraception and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. If the next period is more than 5 days late or unusually light, pregnancy should be excluded. Its effect may be reduced by drugs such as rifampicin, carbamazepine and phenytoin.
