Generic: Simethicone

Square Pharmaceuticals PLC.

Therapeutic Class: Antiflatulent

Indications

Flatulence, abdominal bloating and wind pain; infant colic due to swallowed air.

Pharmacology

Simethicone is an inert silicone antifoaming agent. It lowers the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestine so that they join together and are passed more easily. It is not absorbed from the gut.

Side Effects

Generally well tolerated because it is not absorbed. Rarely mild nausea, loose stools or allergic skin reactions.

Precautions & Warnings

Do not exceed the recommended dose. Consult the physician if the symptoms persist or the infant's colic does not improve.
