Galvus 50 mg

Tablet

Generic: Vildagliptin

Novartis (Bangladesh) Ltd.

Therapeutic Class: DPP-4 Inhibitor (Oral Antidiabetic)

Indications

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, as an adjunct to diet and exercise, alone when metformin is unsuitable or in combination with metformin, a sulfonylurea, a glitazone or insulin.

Pharmacology

Vildagliptin inhibits the enzyme DPP-4, raising the levels of the incretin hormones GLP-1 and GIP. This improves the response of pancreatic beta cells to glucose, increasing insulin release and lowering glucagon release.

Side Effects

Dizziness, headache, tremor, nausea, constipation and hypoglycaemia when combined with a sulfonylurea or insulin. Liver dysfunction and pancreatitis are rare.

Precautions & Warnings

Check liver function before starting, every 3 months during the first year and periodically thereafter; stop if jaundice or a marked rise in liver enzymes occurs. Stop if pancreatitis is suspected. Not recommended in pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to vildagliptin, hepatic impairment, type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis.
