Imotil 2 mg

Capsule

Generic: Loperamide Hydrochloride

Square Pharmaceuticals PLC.

Therapeutic Class: Antidiarrhoeal

Indications

Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea, as an adjunct to rehydration, and of chronic diarrhoea in adults.

Pharmacology

Loperamide binds to opioid receptors in the gut wall, slowing intestinal movement and increasing the absorption of water and electrolytes, so that stools become less frequent and firmer.

Dosage & Administration

Acute diarrhoea (adult and child over 12 years): 4 mg initially, then 2 mg after each loose stool; maximum 16 mg daily. Chronic diarrhoea (adult): 4 to 8 mg daily in divided doses, adjusted according to response; maximum 16 mg daily. Not recommended for children under 12 years unless directed by the physician.

Side Effects

Constipation, abdominal cramps, flatulence, nausea, dizziness, headache and dry mouth.

Precautions & Warnings

Does not replace rehydration; take plenty of fluid and oral saline. Stop the medicine if constipation or abdominal distension develops, or if acute diarrhoea does not improve within 48 hours. Use with caution in liver impairment. Do not exceed the recommended dose, as overdose can cause serious heart rhythm problems.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to loperamide. Acute dysentery with blood in the stool and high fever. Active ulcerative colitis, antibiotic-associated colitis and bacterial enterocolitis. Conditions in which slowing of the bowel must be avoided, such as ileus and abdominal distension.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
