Lantus 100 IU/ml

Injection

Generic: Insulin Glargine

Synovia Pharma PLC.

Therapeutic Class: Long-acting Insulin Analogue

Indications

Diabetes mellitus in adults and in children from 2 years of age who need basal (long-acting) insulin.

Pharmacology

Insulin glargine is a long-acting analogue of human insulin. After injection under the skin it forms micro-precipitates from which insulin is released slowly, giving a fairly constant glucose-lowering effect without a marked peak for up to 24 hours.

Dosage & Administration

The dose is individual and is decided by the physician. Inject under the skin once daily at the same time each day; rotate the injection site. Do not give intravenously and do not mix or dilute with other insulins.

Side Effects

Hypoglycaemia, weight gain, redness, pain or swelling at the injection site, and lumps or hollows under the skin (lipodystrophy). Allergic reactions are rare.

Precautions & Warnings

Not the insulin of choice for diabetic ketoacidosis. Monitor blood glucose regularly; the dose may need adjustment with illness, change of diet or exercise, and in renal or hepatic impairment. Do not share pens between patients.

Contraindications

Hypoglycaemia and hypersensitivity to insulin glargine or any ingredient of the preparation.

Storage Conditions

Store in a refrigerator at 2-8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light and heat. After first use follow the pack leaflet for the in-use period. Keep out of the reach of children.
