Monocard 20 mg

Tablet

Generic: Isosorbide Mononitrate

Drug International Ltd.

Therapeutic Class: Nitrate (Anti-anginal)

Indications

Prophylaxis of angina pectoris. Adjunct in congestive heart failure.

Pharmacology

Isosorbide mononitrate releases nitric oxide and relaxes vascular smooth muscle, mainly dilating veins. This reduces the return of blood to the heart and the oxygen demand of the heart muscle.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: 20 mg two to three times daily; usual range 20-120 mg daily in divided doses. A nitrate-free interval each day (for example taking the second dose about 7 hours after the first) helps prevent tolerance.

Side Effects

Headache, flushing, dizziness, postural hypotension, fast heart rate and nausea.

Precautions & Warnings

Not for relief of an acute attack. Do not stop suddenly. Use with caution in hypothyroidism, recent heart attack, severe hepatic or renal impairment and with alcohol.

Contraindications

Use with sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil or riociguat, severe hypotension, hypovolaemia, severe anaemia, raised intracranial pressure, aortic or mitral stenosis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hypersensitivity to nitrates.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
