Orsaline-N 10.25 g sachet (for 500 ml)

Oral Saline

Generic: Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS)

SMC Enterprise Ltd.

Therapeutic Class: Oral Rehydration Therapy

Indications

Prevention and treatment of dehydration caused by diarrhoea of any cause, including cholera, in all age groups.

Pharmacology

Glucose in the solution promotes the absorption of sodium and water from the small intestine, replacing the water and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride and citrate) lost in the stool. The reduced-osmolarity formula recommended by WHO lowers stool output and vomiting.

Dosage & Administration

Dissolve the full contents of one sachet in 500 ml (half a litre) of safe drinking water. Child under 2 years: 50 to 100 ml after each loose stool. Child 2 to 10 years: 100 to 200 ml after each loose stool. Older child and adult: as much as wanted after each loose stool. Give in small, frequent sips; if the patient vomits, wait 10 minutes and continue more slowly.

Side Effects

Generally well tolerated. Vomiting may occur if taken too quickly. A solution that is too concentrated, or excessive intake, may cause high blood sodium and puffiness of the eyelids.

Precautions & Warnings

Mix with the correct amount of water; do not boil the prepared solution and do not add sugar or salt. Continue breast-feeding and normal food. Seek medical care if diarrhoea persists, if there is blood in the stool, repeated vomiting or signs of severe dehydration. Use with caution in kidney impairment.

Contraindications

Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluids, persistent vomiting, intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus, inability to drink, and severe kidney failure with no urine output.

Storage Conditions

Store sachets below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Keep the prepared solution covered, use it within 12 hours and discard the remainder. Keep out of the reach of children.
