Fenobate 200 mg

Capsule

Generic: Fenofibrate

Renata PLC.

Therapeutic Class: Fibrate (Lipid Lowering Agent)

Indications

Severe hypertriglyceridaemia. Mixed hyperlipidaemia when a statin is contraindicated or not tolerated, as an adjunct to diet.

Pharmacology

Fenofibrate is converted to fenofibric acid, which activates the PPAR-alpha receptor. This increases breakdown of triglyceride-rich particles, markedly lowering triglycerides, moderately lowering LDL cholesterol and raising HDL cholesterol.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: one 200 mg capsule once daily with a meal, or as directed by the physician. Reduce the dose in renal impairment.

Side Effects

Abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, flatulence, raised liver enzymes, rash and muscle pain. Gallstones and pancreatitis are uncommon.

Precautions & Warnings

Monitor liver function and kidney function. The risk of muscle damage increases when used with a statin; report muscle pain. May increase the effect of warfarin.

Contraindications

Severe hepatic or renal impairment, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis (unless due to severe hypertriglyceridaemia), pregnancy, breast-feeding and photosensitivity reactions to fibrates or ketoprofen.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
