Jardiance 25 mg

Tablet

Generic: Empagliflozin

Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Therapeutic Class: SGLT2 Inhibitor (Oral Antidiabetic)

Indications

Type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, as an adjunct to diet and exercise. Symptomatic chronic heart failure. Chronic kidney disease.

Pharmacology

Empagliflozin inhibits the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidney, reducing reabsorption of filtered glucose and increasing its excretion in the urine. This lowers blood glucose independently of insulin and also causes mild diuresis.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: 10 mg once daily, in the morning, with or without food. In type 2 diabetes the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily if needed and tolerated.

Side Effects

Genital fungal infection, urinary tract infection, increased urination, thirst, and low blood pressure or dehydration. Diabetic ketoacidosis (sometimes with near-normal blood glucose) and severe infection of the genital area are rare but serious.

Precautions & Warnings

Assess kidney function before and during treatment. Maintain fluid intake and good genital hygiene. Stop temporarily during acute illness, dehydration or before major surgery. Seek help at once for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or rapid breathing. Avoid in pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to empagliflozin, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis and patients on dialysis.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
