Osartil 50 mg

Tablet

Generic: Losartan Potassium

Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Therapeutic Class: Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (Antihypertensive)

Indications

Hypertension, including patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (to reduce the risk of stroke). Kidney disease in type 2 diabetes with hypertension (diabetic nephropathy). Chronic heart failure when ACE inhibitors are not tolerated.

Pharmacology

Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). By blocking the AT1 receptor it prevents the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-releasing effects of angiotensin II, so blood vessels relax and blood pressure falls. It does not usually cause the dry cough seen with ACE inhibitors.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: 50 mg once daily; may be increased to 100 mg once daily. Elderly over 75 years, volume depletion or hepatic impairment: start with 25 mg once daily. Heart failure: start with 12.5 mg once daily and increase gradually. May be taken with or without food.

Side Effects

Dizziness, low blood pressure, fatigue, raised blood potassium and changes in kidney function. Angioedema is rare.

Precautions & Warnings

Monitor kidney function and serum potassium, especially in renal impairment, renal artery stenosis, heart failure and the elderly. Avoid potassium supplements and potassium-sparing diuretics unless advised. Not recommended during breast-feeding.

Contraindications

Pregnancy, hypersensitivity to losartan, severe hepatic impairment, and use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
