SMC Zinc 20 mg

Tablet

Generic: Zinc Sulphate Monohydrate

SMC Enterprise Ltd.

Therapeutic Class: Mineral Supplement (Adjunct in Diarrhoea)

Indications

Treatment of diarrhoea in children under 5 years together with oral rehydration salts; prevention and treatment of zinc deficiency.

Pharmacology

Zinc is an essential trace element needed for growth, immunity and repair of the intestinal lining. Zinc given during diarrhoea shortens the duration and reduces the severity of the episode and lowers the risk of new episodes in the following 2 to 3 months.

Dosage & Administration

Diarrhoea, child 6 months to 5 years: 20 mg once daily for 10 to 14 days. Diarrhoea, infant under 6 months: 10 mg once daily for 10 to 14 days. Disperse the tablet in a teaspoonful of clean water, breast milk or oral saline before giving.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset and a metallic taste.

Precautions & Warnings

Complete the full course even if the diarrhoea stops earlier. Always give together with oral saline. Zinc reduces the absorption of tetracyclines and quinolone antibiotics, and iron may reduce the absorption of zinc; keep a gap of 2 hours between them. Use with caution in kidney failure.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to zinc salts.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
